Mega Vacation 2007!

Golden Gate Bridge, originally uploaded by Yano.

Hey everyone! Sorry for the lack of posts. I’d been trying to take care of a lot of things before going off on vacation. I’m off for two weeks (yes, TWO WEEKS! YAY!) We’re starting out in San Franciscio (that’s the Golden Gate Bridge up there) then heading out to Los Angeles, then ending it in Hawaii. It’s a long vacation, but hey, I’ve got the vacation days to spare and I REALLY need it.

So we’re heading out for another day of sightseeing, I’ll post all my supertourist pics tonight!

Just testing out blogging directly from my flickr account, so I can send y’all some great pics from my vacation.

I went to the wetlands around my house the other day hoping to see some herons or other cool birds, but there were none to see. I settled for this little guy (and let me tell you, he was LITTLE). Uses my new zoom/macro lens, so actually I was several feet away from him. I didn’t think that I’d have a good capture since I didn’t have a tripod to reduce camera shake, but I think it turned out pretty well!

Moving Day

Finally moving to WordPress. I’ve been working on this for a LONNNNNNG time but have been too busy to make the switch over. There’s still a lot of formatting kinks I need to work out, and the links for the other areas of my blog are still based on the other themes, but I wanted to get this out of the way before I go on vacation (and since my database was corrupt). Movable Type, we had a great run and I still love you, but my version was several years old (too cheap to pay for the new version) and WordPress just seems more Yano-Friendly.

Of course, the move over has not been painless - I had to export all my old entries and import them into Wordpress, which was a pretty long and exhausting process, since my webserver (or WP, but I’m thinking it’s server related) would not allow certain phrases to be imported. Trouble is, I didn’t know WHAT those phrases were. So I had to import into chunks and figure out which phrases were causing my import to error. Here’s the phrases that were giving me errors:

  • Shell - Shelly, an old poster (Pridey, are you still there?) had commented often back in the day. I had to go through and change her comments to “She11y”. I’m assuming this was restricted because “shell” is used in programming
  • cgi-bin - Yeah, another programming word. This was used in several links that were posted (or commented)
  • ebay.com - WTF? I have no idea why this was restricted. But that’s what it was!

For anyone searching for this (because I don’t think I found any help on it…Redpac helped me figure it out), the error I got had to do with not having permission to access admin.php.

So here I am, moved to WP with still a buttload of work to do.

A couple new/improved/soon-to-be-improved things to look out for:

  • We’ve got themes on the right sidebar, though not all of them are completely formatted. This (Transit or YWIM Default) should be good to go for the most part as is “Very Plain Text”. “Nebula” should be ok, but not great.
  • There are top commenters listed on the sidebar. Not many comment anymore, but I kinda liked the idea. We’ll see if it lasts.
  • Comments can now be “threaded” or “nested”. What does that mean? It means that you (or I) can reply to other people’s comments. I like it, it’s pretty cool.
  • You can now see what category the post is grouped under within the post. I’ll be revamping my categories sometime this century, and it will help out when looking through the archives.

Uh, I guess that’s it. This is all kinda in Beta version, so if you see anything weird or something’s not working for you, please comment and let me know!

Enjoy!

…or “Reason #1042 why Ben will hate me when he gets older”

Kinda busy today, working and doing dis n dat…

Bah! I Have Nothing to Do Today!

Shame on you, Cubs! You crapped out in the game yesterday and not only broke my heart for the second time this year (shame on you, Bears!) but now there’s no Game 4, which we had awesome tickets for! Well, not awesome, but any tickets to a division playoffs are awesome, right?

So today, I guess I’ll clean.

*cries*

Get Your Act Together, Cubs!

Yesterday’s game was just painful! Lilly just self-destructed out there and we missed a lot of good chances to score.

Come on, Cubs! Let’s win tomorrow. Don’t make Ben cry!

I’m a Pushing Daisies Pusher

Did any of you catch “Pushing Daisies” yesterday? It was definitely one of the new shows that I was curious to try out. The ads looked cute and the premise - a man who could bring the dead to life by touching them and then dead again after a second touch - was interesting.

So I watched it, AND LOVED IT! It’s definitely on my list of favorite shows now. I could use so many words to describe the show - whimsical, funny, quirky, colorful, imaginative, adorable, and enchanting. The lead, Ned, is charming and sweet. His partner in crime (solving crime, that is), Emerson, is gruff, but lovable (played by the huggable Chi McBride). And Ned’s childhood sweetheart, the un-dead Chuck, is the most alive person on screen.

The show is a joy to watch. The colors just pop off the screen, and it feels like you’re watching a fairytale, thanks to a play by play by the narrator. “Daisies” reminds me a lot of movies like “Edward Scissorhands” and “Stardust”. I’ve read that it’s a lot like “Wonderfalls”, an awesome show that was canceled before I ever got to watch an episode (that I also had on my Blockbuster online queue but canceled before I could watch a show).

So, if you didn’t catch it yesterday, it’ll be on again tomorrow night. I know it may not be something that interests everyone, but it was a perfect fit for me!

…and if I still haven’t convinced you, check out the extended preview.

Come on Cubbies!

Yesterday’s loss was a heartbreaker. Carlos Zambrano did a great job holding back the Arizona offense, but after being taken off in the 6th inning, our bullpen just couldn’t do it (I’m talking to YOU, Carlos Marmol!). But really, I can’t blame Marmol. Our offense just could get it together. Props go to Brandon Webb for some really great pitching for the Diamondbacks.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella pulled Z out after the 6th, which is causing some controversy in the sports pages - Why pull out Z who was doing a great job and who has it in him to pitch the whole game? Lou says he’s keeping him fresh for Game 4. But that’s only IF there’s a game 4. We’ve gotta win one for a game 4 to happen. Even with everyone questioning, Z holds no grudge:

“Whatever they say or criticize Lou about the decision, he’s the manager,” Zambrano said. “He’s the one who guides us. Whatever decision he makes is good. Let’s say he brings Marmol in and he does his job 1-2-3, and we win the game. Nobody talks about that.”

Zambrano did lobby for more.

“I said, ‘Let me pitch one more,’” Zambrano said. “[Piniella] said, ‘That’s enough.’ He’s the manager.

“You know me, I want to pitch every game. I can throw 120 pitches. It’s better like this — I can pitch on Sunday, and 85 pitches was enough. We have a good bullpen, so let them do the job also.”

Cubs can’t back Big Z in Game 1 loss

So keep your fingers crossed for tonight…if we get a win, then I get to go to game 4 on Sunday!

10 Television Shows You’d Like to Have (or Have already) on DVD

After looking at my list, I realize that I’m pretty geek-a-licious

1) Angel
2) Wonderfalls
3) xena: Warrior Princess (do they have that on DVD yet?)
4) Heroes
5) LOST (the last season)
6) Battlestar Gallactica
7) Miracles 8) Twin Peaks
9) Quantum Leap
10) The X-Files

These are all actually DVD’s that I want. I already have Buffy, Smallville, Three’s Company (not mine, but Dave’s), LOST, the Office, and Firefly…

Go Cubs Go (The Chicago Cubs, That Is)

I just finished watching the Chicago Cubs rally downtown (on TV of course, because I’m a good girl and don’t miss work, heh heh) and I’m a little emotional. I’m so glad our team has made it this far (and really, it makes our home a bit happier so Dave isn’t trudging around like a grumpy bear). However, with this euphoric, happy feeling, comes that nervousness, that nagging feeling in the back of my head that says, “Don’t get TOO happy now”. Dave said it best when he said, “I feel a Bartman hiding behind every corner”, which he didn’t coin himself, but I don’t know where he got it from.

More playoff videos at Cubbieskank

As a city, we are overjoyed to win the division, but we know that the journey is still a long one. Yet, we have rallies, we wear our division shirts and hats proudly…and the lyrics of “Go Cubs Go” are heard throughout the city:

Go Cubs Go

They’re singing Go Cubs go, go Cubs go
Hey Chicago what do you say?
The Cubs are gonna win today
Go Cubs go, go Cubs go
Hey Chicago what do you say?
The Cubs are gonna win today

…oh, and I didn’t want to tell y’all until I knew we made the playoffs for sure, but guess who scored tickets in the bleacher section for Game 4?

Me!

ME! ME! ME! ME!

Whoo hoo! Go Cubbies!
