There’s Hope for Today’s Youth!

The other day we went to Walmart to look for cheap portable DVD players for our vacation. Ben often gets really fidgety in the cart so I just let him wander around, while, of course, I keep an eye on him.

He’s gotten into the funny little habit of dancing in public. First it’s a little dance, but if some random shopper passes by and comments, he’ll dance again, much longer and more elaborately. He’s a little ham, my little guy is!

We were in the electronics section and Ben found the videogame demo section. You know, the place where they have controllers set up and kids stand for hours playing for free? The controller was just within Ben’s grasp, but he had to get up on his tippy toes to touch it. He really didn’t care whether or not he was controlling anything on-screen, it was the controller he was interested in. I just stood on the side and watched him reach to grasp the buttons.

Soon, an boy came by, about 9 or 10 years old. He was on those shoe/roller skate combo things that I find really intriguing. He rolled up to Ben and the controller and I was expecting him to nudge Ben out of the way so he could play. But to my surprise, he stood there and bent the controller holder so it was more accessible for Ben to play with. At first, Ben thought he wanted to play with it so he stood aside, but when the boy just stood there and pointed to the controller, Ben cautiously went back and played with the buttons as the boy held it for him.

Ben then ran away to check out other things, and the boy went back to his shopping (or waiting for this parents). Ben went back to the controller, and once again, the little boy came by to help him out. Ben tinkered around a bit with it as the boy watched and held down the controller. When Ben was done, he looked up at the boy and did his best 5 second dance. The boy laughed and said, “You’re a funny little baby!” and walked away.

The next day, Ben and I went to go watch Dave play at his company softball game. There was a boy there, about 13 or 14, who was there to watch his mom play. The three of us were in the dugout, and didn’t speak for the first several innings. But Ben was so entertaining with his yelling and running around, I could tell that the boy was warming up to him. What finally broke his cool exterior was when Ben did his little hand dance - the boy laughed out loud. After that, he played with Ben, putting a baseball in his hood and making sure he didn’t run off onto the field. Ben liked the boy so much that he raised his arms to him, asking him to pick him up. The boy looked at me confused, and I said, “He wants you to pick him up.” He looks surprised, and gingerly picked up Ben and sat him on his lap. Ben spent the next several minutes sitting on the boys lap and watching the game. It was cute.

There are many times when I see the behavior of kids and cringe, scared that they’re going to hurt my son (like the kid who stepped on Ben’s hand at the playground the day of the softball game) or be a bad influence on him. It’s times like the ones above, though, that make me feel a little better about letting my little boy into the big, big world. Not all kids were meant for the super-nanny…some of ‘em turn out quite alright!

My Dirty Little Secret

I just wanted to confess something to you guys…

Those of you who have been reading this blog for a while know that I’m a novice at cooking, that I make mistakes like shredding cabbage for tacos instead of lettuce. But since we must eat to survive, eating out is too costly, and my in-laws don’t invite us to dinner every day, then I have been forced to practice the art of cooking.

Since I’m up late at night working, I often have “Iron Chef” or “Top Chef” on Bravo on. I’m fascinated by the fact that these people can come up with amazing food right off the top of their heads. For me, cooking involves carefully measured ingredients, timers, and hours and hours of chopping things. But by watching these shows, I’ve learned that you don’t have to stick by the book, you can just use your sense of taste and what you think would taste good.

So here’s my dirty little secret - I LOVE COOKING! Yes, I can’t believe I’ve said that, and 2 years ago, cooking was like torture to me. But now, I’ve allowed myself to not get stressed over it. It has become less of a chore and more of an artform, a way to express myself through food. Although I still use recipes, I’ve learned to go off on my own. Even with recipes, I know when I can add a little splash of this or a dash of that to make it better.

I’m always working to make myself better, though I think it annoys Dave when I keep on asking him, “How is it? Can I make it better? Was it better last time?” Maybe I should just have a comment card for him to fill out after he eats.

So yeah, if I wasn’t so busy working, I’d be a cooking fiend! As it is, I really only get a chance to cook something interesting about once a week…

Ben Loves Disco

Yesterday Ben and I went clubbing. My cousin had sent me an email about a baby dance party called “Baby Loves Disco“. Baby Loves Disco gives parents a way to go out and dance, and bring their little ones along for the experience. The parties are held at clubs that have been babyproofed, with a whole bunch of activities for little ones to keep them entertained. There’s dance props, nutritious snacks, baby lounges on the side, dance contests and a real DJ.

I was debating on going, because there’s a lot of stuff that I needed to do this weekend (and really, I need some rest), but I finally decided to do it on Friday to give Ben a little treat. Unfortunately, when I finally got online to buy the tickets, it was too late.

I emailed the hostess of the party, and she told me that if I got in early, I could probably get tickets at the door. So we headed out on Sunday, and at first, I was really worried about parking since the club was a block away from Wrigley and there was a game at the same time, but then Dave told me that they were playing in Pittsburgh. So we were lucky to get free parking just two blocks away.

The party was held at the Metro, a venue known more for being the launching pad of alternative and rock bands than as a babyproofed baby club. It was funny to come in and see the regular staff working the party. For some reason I had thought that BLD would have brought in their own, but it made sense that the people working the party were the ones most familiar with the venue. Throughout the day the staff just had a look of curiosity and amusement. It felt like going to a club, because as I tried to enter the club, the bouncer stopped me and said, “I’m sorry, but you’ll have to park your stroller in our stroller parking.”

Stroller parking ended up being the Metro store, which was also the Diaper Changing room, complete with a soft diaper changing table, free wipes and antibacterial wipes.

As I paid the entrance fee and walked in, I could hear some of the staff snickering to each other, saying, “Hey, did you hear that Frank has to work the Diaper Changing Room?” The whole day they seemed pretty entertained and a little out of sorts when they had to look down to avoid collisions with little people.

Once I got in, it looked just like any other club - lights flashing, music blaring, but with one exception - half of the people on the dancefloor were little babies. They carried around egg shaped shakers, danced around with flimsy scarves, and got their groove on. I saw my friend Chariya there with her son and her friends. They were already pretty tired from chasing around their tots. Fortunately for me, Ben’s a little slow to warm-up when he gets to places so he clung to me for the first half hour. He just sat on my lap just watching all the other kids dance around.

Once he finally got used to the place, he got busy - not dancing, but climbing up and down the steps on the second floor. He worked those three steps (from the bar area to the seating area) for about half an hour, making friends with the little girl whose seat he was using as a banister. The DJ played some great tunes, like “Bust a Groove” and “Rollercoaster of Love”.

We went back down to the dancefloor (after watching the dance contest from above) and Ben got his groove on. He found a bunch of stuffed animals to dance with and hand out to the little girls he met.

In the end, he had a good time and something we’ll definitely do again. So if you’re a mom in the Chicago area (Jen! Rachel!) the next Baby Loves Disco will be in November.

Here’s pics!

Yes, I’m Gonna Talk About Britney!

I admit it, I was almost hoping that Britney Spears’ performance at the VMA’s yesterday would bomb. Maybe a slip, maybe a breakdown, maybe just standing there like a deer in headlights.

What I saw yesterday could only be described as sad. I felt bad for her. The girl who was so outgoing and had “it” in terms of being able to hold the crowd in her performance was gone. She was nervous, tentative, and looked like she just wanted to get the thing over with. She was just going through the motions and the confidence she had, that fire in her eye that made her performances so exciting, was gone. MTV should never had asked her to perform, to put herself out there before she was ready.

Now for a moment of cattiness - she should NOT have worn that outfit. I’m not saying she’s fat because she looks great for someone who’s had two kids, but her body isn’t ready for a bikini like that. Learn a lesson from Beyonce, whose dress highlighted her assets and kept her extra baggage hidden under flowy layers.

Other quick comments (I didn’t watch the whole show because bath-time takes precedence!)

- Is it me, or did Dr. Dre look like he was wearing Incredible Hulk padding under his shirt? Has he always been that huge?

- Best performance of the night? Chris Brown, hands down. (hey, I’m a poet and didn’t know it!) He had that spark that has been missing for so long. The kid can dance, he’s entertaining, and he knows he’s awesome. Extra points for the Billie Jean impersonation. 25 years later and kids are STILL doing it. Also, props to Rihanna for NOT lipsynching, and for just being as cute as a button.

- Second place? Alicia “Hips” Keys. The girl’s beautiful, she can sing, and I loved the part when she was singing on the table and the dude sitting there was trying to get a picture of her at just the right angle, trying to be all sneaky. Dude, you’re on national television, we’re going to see you. Back to Alicia - she always manages to have entertaining, meaningful performances. I heart her.

- I kinda liked the idea of the performances being in different locations. No big show, setups or lights for most of the performances…they were low-key and felt like they were concentrating on the music rather than hiding behind backup dancers and lipsynching.

- Bravo to Justin Timberlake for telling MTV to show more videos. Then again, who am I to complain? I watch videos on MTV all the time. Why? Because I’m up at 4 in the morning working, that’s why!

- Did they give out awards? I must have missed them

Too Much Salt can Put You in Jail

Give me a break!

Oversalted burger leads to charges

UNION CITY, Ga. - A McDonald’s employee spent a night in jail and is facing criminal charges because a police officer’s burger was too salty, so salty that he says it made him sick.

Kendra Bull was arrested Friday, charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct and freed on $1,000 bail.

Bull, 20, said she accidentally spilled salt on hamburger meat and told her supervisor and a co-worker, who “tried to thump the salt off.”

This isn’t food poisoning, it’s a crappy burger. Just ask for you money back, jerk!

Bubble Boy

I’m running on about 6 hours of sleep over the last 2 days. That usually wouldn’t be THAT big of a problem except that I’ve been really sick lately, with a painful cough and I have no voice. Sometimes I sound like a secy Demi Moore, most times I sound like a scary trucker.

Dave and I got sick at around the same time (from Benjamin, the source of all our colds) and he’s been OK since labor day. I’m sure its a combination of a number of things that are affecting my road to wellville.

*sigh*

*cough*

Hi, My Name’s Christine…and I’m a Workaholic

Interesting article I found on Yahoo! today:

The High Cost of Being a Workaholic

The best workers are well-rounded professionals with full lives, in and out of the office. Each year, new studies abound about the importance of vacations, hobbies, and enjoying your leisure time. But are you listening?

Your friends and family will be in your life a lot longer than you’ll hold most jobs. Also, pursuing leisure activities you’re passionate about can lead to a second career.

Cheng concludes, “Work-life balance is a choice. If you reflexively say yes to taking on extra work, you may live to regret it.”

Eh. It would be nice to be able to say, “No, I can’t do that”.

Hmph

Claire Danes, I Forgive You

You know, I’ve always carried a little bit of a grudge against Claire Danes for the remarks that she made about the Philippines way back in ‘98 - calling the capital, Manila, a “ghastly and weird city”. I think she’s the only celebrity in the Philippines who has her movies banned from being screened.

Since then, I’ve just had this negative feeling towards her, even though I loved her in “My So Called Life”. I started warming up to her again after watching “The Family Stone”, because I admit, she truly is a great actress. But I still had that little nagging feeling about her.

That changed last weekend. Fatima had been wanting to watch “Stardust” for the last several weeks, and I finally had some free time to go out and see the movie. Truthfully, based on the commercials and my Claire Danes issues I really didn’t feel like watching the movies. I’m a Neil Gaiman fan, so I did read the book, but it was so long ago that I really didn’t remember much about the story outside of it being about a man hunting for a falling star, which ends up being a woman. But Fatima wanted some quality time, and I admit, I was curious.

I went into the movie with pretty low expectations. I knew that the movie had a pretty high profile cast - Danes, Michelle Pfieffer, Robert DeNiro headline the movie. But based on the trailer, it just looked so-so. If it wasn’t for Fatima, I probably would have just waited for this movie to show up on cable.

I’m happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how good the movie was. The movie had the perfect mix of fantasy, adventure, romance and comedy. I found myself very involved in the movie, laughing at the funny parts and sighing during the romantic parts. Danes was excellent, and the lead in the movie, “Charlie Cox”, was charming as the reluctant hero. The movie totally goes crazy once DeNiro comes on screen, and I don’t want to spoil the scene for you, but let me tell you, I would have NEVER figured DeNiro to pick the role he did. He goes all out in his role, and is definitely the highlight of the movie. Michelle Pfieffer is back after being in hiding for several years, and she looks gorgeous. I was also surprised to see Sienna Miller in the movie as well - I think the is the first movie I’ve seen with her and she truly is a beautiful woman.

If I could compare this movie to any other, it would be “The Princess Bride”. Of course, this movie doesn’t hold a candle to it, but it’s as close as I’ve seen. It takes you to a magical land, with fantastic characters, good and bad. You really feel for the lead characters, you truly want them to be together and your heart swoons during every special moment they share.

So if you get a chance, go out and see this movie. It’s a lot of fun, a great escape into a wonderful world of fantasy.
