Surprise Kitchen Inspection

So I’ve been working in the Milwaukee for the last several weeks, and Ben has been in the care of Dave, and when Dave’s been working, his parents.

My in-laws love to take Ben to different places, to the mall, to their friend’s homes, to restaurants, etc. One of their friends from out of town was staying with them last week, and they were taking him out to places, bringing Ben along.

They were at a restaurant eating dinner one night, and Ben was in a baby chair. Dave’s dad took him out of the chair to let him cruise around the table. He thought that Dave’s mom and her friend were aware that Ben was crawling around, so he went to the bathroom.

A couple minutes later, one of the cooks comes out of the kitchen. Guess what he’s doing? Carrying Benjamin! Turns out that Benjamin silently crawled away from the table and wandered into the kitchen. I’m sure that the cooks in the kitchen were pretty surprised to see my little tyke crawling in.

My in-laws’ friend sees Ben and goes up to the cook to thank him for bringing the baby out. Once Dave’s dad got back to the table, they had a good laugh about Ben’s little adventure.

Can you imagine what trouble he’ll get into when he starts walking?!?!?

Money Changes Everything

Just when I was going to complain about work more, I get a call from my manager about my yearly review that just got approved.

Turns out I’m getting a raise.

Enough of a raise that I gasped, “ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!” to my manager after he gave me what I’d be making.

I guess I was a good little girl this year and got some good marks on my review based on all the coworkers I’ve bribed to put in a good word for me should my manager ever ask for their input. That, and I suspect that I was making much lower than the people who are currently doing what I’m doing at X-Inc, so not only did I get a raise, but I got an adjustment on my salary. Which means that its a significan payraise for me.

So for now, I am happy. Tired, overworked, and stressed….but happy nonetheless.

What makes this all better? Tomorrow is a new episode of Lost…which has been pretty kickass over the last several weeks!

Even better than that?

Tomorrow I go home and get to hug Benjers! Yay!

Quick Hits

Still working like a madwoman…but here’s a couple quickies to keep you busy while I’m working for “The Man”.

Speed Racer
I had asked my client in Milwaukee if the cops in Wisconsin were tougher on Illinois people than Wisconsinites. I had heard a rumor that the cops up north target IL license plates. She told me that it wasn’t true, but that people from Chicago tended to speed more than people in Wisconsin. I checked it out and it was true - more cars with Illinois plates were speedier than Wisconsin cars. I guess that’s because we’ve got that “10 over the speed limit is ok” rule.

So I try to keep my speed in check, but sometimes I fall into my old ways.

Today, as I was driving to Milwaukee, I saw the cars in front of me brake, and I realized, too late, why. There was a state trooper in the median, ready to pick his prey. I did a speed check, and before I softly applied my brakes I was doing about 12 over the speed limit. As I passed to cop I looked in my rearview to see the car pulling out from the median. I started chanting to myself, “please, not me, please, not me”, but since I was the last car in my little batch, I knew that I wasn’t going to be lucky. The cop came up behind me, and I waited for him to start flashing his lights. Nothing. Then he pulled up next to me, and I maintained an even 65mph the whole time. I looked at the cop car to see if he was motioning for me to pull over, but nothing. He stayed right next to me for about two miles, then exited the highway.

It was a little bizarre, but at least I didn’t get pulled over!

Heatwave
At my client site today, they didn’t have the air on. The conference room we were in was sweltering, we were all complaining about the heat (it was 78 in Milwaukee today). I was talking to one of the women I was working with and told her I was tempted to take off my sweater and just wear my sleeveless shirt underneath. She said it wouldn’t be a big deal and that I should since it was so hot in the room and my sweater was pretty thick. So I did, and although I felt a little self conscious with my sleeveless top, I didn’t feel as warm. We ended up leaving early anyway since no one could concentrate with all the heat.

Out Sick
Looks like my home desktop has gotten a virus. I’m not sure how it got it (though I know it wasn’t me since I don’t surf the internet on that machine) but every time I go to the computer, it seems to have gotten worse and worse. I’ve run through several programs to fix the problem, but I may have to suck it up and bring it in to get repaired. For some reason, this really pisses me off. It makes me angry that there are people out there trying to create these things to screw people over, and it makes me angry to know that someone actually get this virus on my machine. Fortunately, I was able to make a backup of Ben’s good baby pictures before the situation got too bad!

I Have Unoriginal Ideas

Yesterday, I had wanted to bring Ben to the Zoo, since I knew that it would be in the 50’s. I wanted to have some quality time with my little guy, since I’ve been away from home so much. It was cloudy yesterday, and the weather said that it was likely that there’d be thunderstorms. We ended up going to Dave’s parent’s house because they had guests from out of town over.

Today I woke up and saw the weather report, and they had mentioned that it was going to be a beautiful morning and afternoon, in the lower 70’s and we had a chance to break the record temperature for the day. I wasn’t planning on going to the zoo today, since I’m a bit behind on some work and I didn’t really do anything yesterday. But the weather was too good to pass up. So we decided to head out to the zoo today to enjoy the beautiful weather. It’s still early in the season, so I knew that there wouldn’t be a lot of people there.

I guess I’m not the only one who thought it would be a perfect day to go to the zoo. When we got there, there was a line of cars trying to get into the parking lot, and there were people everywhere! Luckily, I’ve got a membership, so we didn’t have to pay for parking.

The day was gorgeous. There was a cool breeze blowing and the sun was nice and warm. This was Ben’s second time at the zoo (though I was there several times when I was preggo) and he had a much better time this time around. When he spotted the animals moving around, he liked to shout at them and point. He really enjoyed the meerkats in their little den. I think he loved the polar bear the most, since he was pretty active today, pacing around his grotto. Ben shouted and growled at him and tried to climb over the fence to get to him. It was pretty cute.

After about 3 hours, though, he had his fill of the zoo and started getting antsy, so we headed home. There was still a long line to get into the zoo as we were heading out, so we were happy we came early.

I’m thinking of getting Ben a little book going over different animals, so we can prepare a little better for the next time!

11 Month Collage

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Ben collage. Then again, it’s been pretty hard to keep him on one place to take the pictures. Before, I’d just throw him on the bed and make noises so I could get all the different faces. Now, it’s a little harder to make him go through so many faces in one sitting. It’s funny how his face hasn’t changed much. If you look at the three month collage, he still looks the same. But this time, he’s got his crazy bangs and 6 teeth…

Tired

So tired. I’m in Milwaukee right now, driving home every other day this week. I haven’t been getting much sleep lately, and I’ve got this weird throat cold going on. I’ve been pretty crabby over the last week or so and find myself getting angry over little things, which is very out of character since I rarely get angry.

There are some internal things going on at work which I try not to affect my client work or stress me out too much, but I’ve found myself drifting off into thought several times.

It helps that I have an awesome manager to talk to (that makes two awesome managers in a row!).

It also helps that I’ve got someone on my team who I trust and can confide in, who understands what I’m going through.

Of course, what helps the most is knowing that tomorrow I’ll be going home to the best baby EVER (oh, and that Husband guy, too).

Yes, I Know He’s On Dancing With The Stars

Over the last month or so, I’ve gotten comments, emails, text messages and phone calls, all pretty much starting out the same way - “Hey, did you know that Apolo’s going to be on Dancing With the Stars?”

This “Apolo” being Apolo Anton Ohno, who I’ve filed under “those years that short track was a hobby”. You all may know that I was (and still am to a point) a huge fan of the sport, going to competitions when I could and making some amazing friends along the way. So in a way, I owe it all to that long-haired soul patched foxtrotter.

It makes me laugh that when friends and family see his name they think of me, even though that’s been a part of my life that I really haven’t had time for lately. My short track life is something that is a distant memory, replaced by dirty diapers, pureed banana on my floor and waking up to a giggling, smiling face (when he isn’t falling off the bed, that is).

But yes, I’m aware that Apolo’s going to be dancing in this season of DWTS, I’ve known for some time yet. I have mixed feelings about it. Part of me is interested to see how he does, to see if his moves on the ballroom floor are as good as his moves on the ice. Part of me is wary of this move - I’ve felt that DWTS is a place where publicity hungry people go to extend their 15 minutes of fame. Nonetheless, I’ll be watching it (like I do every year - Mario was cheated, man!) and I’ll be cheering for A-Lo.

Thanks to all of you who thought of me and let me know, just so I didn’t miss it.

I’m A Clydesdale!

A couple weeks ago I was on a whirlwind tour of my clients various factory plants all over the US. While there, there were times that we would have to pass the factory floor to get to the meeting rooms. Every site has it’s own safety rules, but most of them required safety eyewear. If you didn’t carry your own, there was a big box of these HUGE lenses to wear, which never really fit me right since my nose is so tiny. Those lenses pretty much just fell off my face. Luckily, someone gave me some “cool” lenses to wear, which were much smaller and fit snugly around my ears.

At one of the plants, they not only required safety lenses, but also steel toed shoes. When dealing with such heavy machinery, steel toed shoes are a lifesaver. Like the other plants, if you didn’t have your own steel toed shoes, they had some for you. In a big box were these she11-looking things with rubberbands tied to the back. You put the she11 over the top of your shoes and reach the rubberband back around, making your own steel toed shoes. We all felt a little silly walking around, since the fake steel toes made this *clop* *clop* sound wherever we went. We sounded like a herd of Clydesdales walking around the plant!

Of course, I had to take pictures!

Faceplant!

As I may have mentioned before, we usually put Ben to sleep in his crib at night, and get him in the early morning when he wakes and transferring him to our bed to sleep again. Usually he wakes at around 4 or 5 am, I go over to his room, pick him up, then bring him over to our room to sleep until he really wakes up, around 7 or 8. Usually Dave leaves at around 6, so he builds a little pillow wall on the other side of the bed so Ben won’t roll over and fall off the bed.

Sometimes Ben wakes up before me in the morning, and he’ll play around with my face or cry, so I know he’s awake. Lately, he’s become connected to his Elmo doll, so when he wakes up he usually plays with him, tossing him around, biting his eyeballs, playing with his hands.

The other day, I woke up to a loud *BANG*. I knew immediately that Ben had fallen off the bed. I got up and ran to the other side of the bed and saw what looked like a mini-murder scene (without the death, blood, and gore). Ben was face first on the floor, with Elmo’s body splayed out next to him. Pillows (which had previously been the pillow wall) were on the floor next to them. As I was coming around the bed, Ben had started screaming, not his normal cry of “Notice me!” or “Feed me!” I scooped him up in my arms and hugged him and checked to see what the damage was.

His forehead was a bit red, and he had a little cut under his nose, which was also red. He cried and I hugged him, apologizing for not waking up and watching over him. We sat for a while and I hugged him and rocked him, and after about four or five minutes, he was ok. Fifteen minutes later, he was crawling around and laughing like nothing happened.

I was able to piece together what could have happened. He probably woke up before me, saw Elmo and was quietly playing with him. Then he probably flung Elmo off the bed. He looked for Elmo, and seeing that there was a pillow wall created, pushed the pillows onto the floor so he could get a better look off the side of the bed. Seeing Elmo on the floor, Ben then launched his little body off the bed to go get his little buddy. Then one of two things happened. Either he fell off the bed, landed on the pillows he had dropped, then rolled over and hit his head on the floor OR he launched himself far enough to bypass the pillows and land directly on the floor. By the sound that I heard and the way he and Elmo were on the floor, it was the latter.

It seemed like everything was OK with him, there wasn’t too much swelling on his forehead and when I touched his nose he didn’t cry or wince from pain. I called the doctor to let them know what happened, and they told me to make sure that he wasn’t lethargic or that he hadn’t lost his appetite. He was actually the opposite, cruising around and laughing all morning and eating a hearty breakfast.

I felt a bit like a bad mother, but I remember friends and relatives telling me of times they had dropped their kids or when their kids had fallen off beds. It seems like its just one of those things that happens. I told my coworker about it and he had told me that once his kid accidentally fell out of the car and landed on the curb, and everything was OK. Knowing this made me feel a lot better, as well as seeing that Ben was doing ok.

So we’ve put a nice plush rug right next to the bed in case Ben plans on doing another flying leap to save his friend.

Man, he’s not even walking yet and he’s already getting into trouble!

Summah Summah Summahtiiime

Last week, I was trudging through the snow in Milwaukee. Today, I was standing in a t-shirt and jeans on my driveway walking Ben around. Can you believe it was 74 degrees in Chicago yesterday? Times like this I really miss working downtown. On a day like yesterday, everyone is out, basking in the warmth, and it feels like summertime. We emerge from our work-caves, like little bears after a long winter hibernation, wiping the sleep from our eyes and welcoming spring by strolling down Michigan avenue and stretching that lunch break by another 15 minutes.

Luckily, I’ll be in the city tomorrow, for the first time in a while, eating at my favorite restaurant. I really need the break (even though it’s work related). It’s been a pretty stressing last couple weeks and it will be nice to sit and relax, even if it’s with coworkers I’ve never met before!
