I’ve Been a Very, Very Bad Girl!

…but I just couldn’t help myself.

As you may know, I’ve got a lot of camera envy. I’m part of flickr and I’m always amazed at the beautiful shots that people take, especially the ones from people who have kids. The ones that impress me the most always have one thing in common - they’re taken with a digital SLR camera. It’s a digital camera that acts like a regular, old fashioned camera.

I often use the manual mode on my Camedia, but there’s only so much I can do with it. I’ve always had problems with low light pictures being grainy and trying to catch pictures of objects in motion.

So I’ve been thinking of getting a DSLR. It was a long range plan, since the good ones run at least $700. Since having Benjo, money’s pretty tight right now.

I’m sure you know where this is going…

Anyway, I stopped by Staples the other day to buy some toner for my printer, and I saw a yellow sign in the camera area. They had the Nikon D50 on sale for $150 less than what it usually costs. I played around with the sample camera…it was awesome…

I ran home and did all the research I could on the D50 - it seems like no one has any major complaints about it. Most people find it comparable to Canons, some find it even better. The best thing was the price that Staples was offering it was cheaper than many of the internet prices that I found (the ones that seemed legit, that is).

So I decided to check it out at Staples again - because I had to go buy envelopes. I saw the D50 and asked if they had any more in stock - the price was only for things in stock. I was told that they only had one left.

I got home and told Dave that I was going to buy a new camera. He was hesitant, since I already have a camera, but I told him I’d cut back on some things and sell stuff on ebay to make up for it. I went back to Staples and bought the camera. They took it out of the cage, I paid for it, and ran home, ready to play with my new toy.

I opened the box and saw several smaller boxes. I opened the first one, which felt very light. Inside there was just styrofoam packing. I opened the next, nothing but a plastic bag. The third one had batteries, a charger, and a bunch of cords. No camera! I looked at the box and it said “Display”…they sold me the box of the display model.

I ran back to Staples and explained that I purchased an empty box. The only D50 they had there was the display model, and after some thought I decided to just get the display model. They gave me 10% off what the clearance price was, which was a nice chunk of change, and I was off again.

I got home and opened up my new treasure, once again. I had no idea how to use the thing! Ben was lying on the floor so I tried taking pictures of him with the manual setting. I gave up after a while (I didn’t bother to look at the manual yet) and went to the automatic mode. I had much more success with that!

So here’s one of my first pictures, with my new camera. Cammie (my older camera) will still be used on a regular basis, but Difty (his new name) will be for special occasions!

I’m in the office today, taking a lot of pictures…I’ll tell you all why later!

A Day in the Life…

Yesterday was LONG day, and pretty crazy. I just wanted to share it with y’all, blow by blow…

12:30am - I go to sleep after finishing a project for work that was due at midnight.

3:15am - Benjamin wakes up, he’s cranky and hungry.

3:30am - My alarm goes off. It doesn’t matter because I’m up feeding Benjamin.

3:35am - The snooze goes off, I forgot to turn the alarm off. Doesn’t matter, Ben’s still up fussing.

3:40am - Benjamin calms down a little, I put him in his crib to go back to sleep.

3:45am - My cell phone alarm goes off (I was paranoid that I’d oversleep). Once again, I’m up anyway becaus Ben’s still fussy.

4:00am - Ben finally calms down, though he’s not sleeping. I sit in his room and wait to see if he goes back to sleep.

4:15am - Ben’s still awake, but he’s not crying, so I go to take a quick shower - I’m already running late.

4:30am - I finish up with my shower and I hear Benjamin crying in his room. As I pass Dave sleeping in bed I give him a glaring look for not waking up to check on the baby. I go to Ben’s room, pick him up, soothe him, and then bring him into the room to sleep next to Dave while I get ready.

4:40am - I’m still running around getting ready. I check on Ben and Dave. Dave’s fast asleep, Ben’s wide awake staring at the ceiling.

4:45am - I wake up Dave’s dad, who’s sleeping in the basement so he doesn’t have to drive over so early in the morning to take care of the baby. He comes up and gets the little brat.

4:50am - I finally leave for the airport, 20 minutes behind schedule.

5:15am - Luckily there’s no traffic, and I get to the airport in good time, an hour before my flight. Normally I’d freak, but since this is just a one day gig I don’t have any luggage to check in. I get my boarding pass and head through security to my gate.

5:45am - I board my plane, with my McDonald’s breakfast and orange juice in hand.

5:55am - I end up sitting next to two coworkers who talk really loud. The woman sitting next to me uses the whole arm rest and pokes me several times with her elbow as she’s moving around. She does not apologize. I am annoyed. I have decided that I do not like this woman. I want to sleep and they are loud. I suffer in silence.

6:15am - We take off, amazingly, on time. The pilot tells us we should get to Dallas by 8:30am.

7:00am - Luckily, they stop talking. I can sleep!

7:15am - I wake up in a daze as they’re passing out snacks. The flight attendant asks if I want some, and knowing that I have my McDonald’s, I say ‘no’. The two next to me say yes and she hands them Biscoffs. BISCOFFS!!! I love Biscoffs! I raise my hand to let her know that I’ve changed my mind. She has already passed. The lady sitting next to me turns around and says a loud “Excuse me!” to get the attendant’s attention. She then tells the attendant that I, too, would like a snack. In seconds I have a pack of yummy Biscoffs in my hands. I hide them in my bag for a special occasion. The woman next to me has been forgiven for her poking. She is now one of my favorite people.

8:35am - I wake up from my nap and look at my watch - Shouldn’t we have landed by now? Who cares. I’m sleepy! I go back to sleep.

8:40am - The pilot announces that there are thunderstorms in the area and they have closed the Dallas airport. We’ve been hovering around waiting but we’re running out of gas so we’re going to Tulsa, OK to refuel.

9:30am - We land at the Tulsa airport. The pilot says we can’t leave the plane because we’re not at a gate. We’re going to get some paperwork and gas and then head back to Dallas. I call up my client to tell him I’d be late.

10:00am - They announce that the airport is open again so we’re going to get in line for a runway so we can take off back to Dallas.

10:30am - We’re on the runway, ready to takeoff to go to Dallas

10:31am - The pilot announces that they’ve closed the airport again. We’re going back to our little corner of the airport. I call my client to give him an update.

11:00am - They decide to take us to a gate at the airport so people can get out and stretch their legs. People are grouchy, they’ve missed connections and they’ve been stuck in a plane for 5 hours.

11:20am - I decide to get in line at the cafe for some lunch. The line is pretty huge. There’s only one guy in the back making the meals, the other guy called in sick. We’re all grumpy, but we tell the guy it’s ok because we’re not going anywhere.

11:40am - I finally get my meal and I saunter back to the gate, hoping that there’s an outlet I can plug my laptop into. I used up the battery on the plane and I have a TON of work to do. I wonder where all the people went. It turns out that they reboarded the plane without making an announcement. Or maybe I just didn’t hear it in the cafe. I get on the plane. As I’m sitting there I see all the people who were in the cafe line behind me come in, confused.

12:00pm - We finally take off, headed to Dallas.

12:45pm - We land at Dallas! I grab a cab and head out to my client site.

1:15pm - I get to my client site, only 5 hours late. We go through a bunch of meetings.

6:15pm - My client drops me off at the airport for my 7:50pm flight.

6:20pm - I find out that my flight is delayed until 8:50pm.

6:45pm - I get some dinner at Taco Bell. I find out that pretty much everyone’s flights are delayed because of the morning’s weather.

7:15pm - I sit at the gate, which is pretty empty, reading a magazine and waiting for the 8:20pm boarding time.

7:55pm - The gate’s pretty empty. I’m wondering where everyone is. They must be hiding. That’s ok, I’m enthralled by this article about Jessica Alba.

8:00pm - I look up and realize that there are people going into the gate. I look at the board and see that they’ve changed the departure time to 8:23pm. I get up to board the plane.

8:40pm - We take off!

10:30pm - I’m back in Chicago! Yay! The great thing about not checking anything in is that I don’t have to wait for my luggage. I just have to go straight to my car.

11:15pm - I’m back at home. Dave’s still sick, Ben-pao is already sleeping. I’m pooped but of course, I still have enough strength to log in and change the trivia topic!

11:45pm - Of course, I’m still awake surfing the internet. I’m in Ben’s room and I hear him shuffling around. I hear a little squeak and know that Ben’s just about to wake up…this time I don’t mind as much since I’ve missed him while I’ve been gone!

Whew! What a crazy day. I should have known it would be a difficult trip. The last time I was at DFW was during “the worst birthday ever”. I should just make it a point not to fly there!

Halfway to A Year Old!!!

Don’t think that I forgot that today is Benjamin’s 6 month birthday!

I’ve been so swamped with work lately and had a midnight deadline for a project I wanted to wait before I put up his birthday collage.

As I’ve mentioned a thousand times, Bendy learns something new every day, he never ceases to amaze us with his skills. Currently he is mastering the art of sitting on his own. At first he could only sit on his own for less than a minute. Now, it’s indefinite, depending on when he gets bored with sitting on his own. I decided to have him sitting for this month’s collage. Each month gets a little harder to get a range of expressions, since he’s getting older and has normal moods.

I’m really tired right now and I have to get up at 4am to catch a 6am flight, so I’ll write more tomorrow, hopefully!

Bad Touches, Toilet Seats and More

I’m doing post catch up…I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to post!

Here’s a couple more tidits from San Bernardino:

Yano Does a Bad Touch

Often when I’m at a client site with a group of people, we go out for lunch. I was with a great, lively group and I knew that lunchtime would be fun with them. One of the women had a big SUV so we decided to just take one car for the 5 of us. There was one man among us, and he volunteered to sit in the back seat in the middle.I sat next to him and proceeded to put on my seat belt (it’s the law in California). However, there was no way to put on my seat belt without touching his butt. I gave him a warning, “Hey, I’m putting on my seatbelt here, just want you to know.” He moved up his buttcheek to give me room, but it was hard for me to click the belt without grazing a cheek. He was having the same problem on his side - he couldn’t get his belt on without touching the woman’s buttcheek next to him. We finally got our belts on after a lot of laughing and remarks about sexual harrassment.

Those Crazy Toilet Seat Covers

One thing that you’ll see in every bathroom in California is a toilet seat cover dispenser. We have them here and there in Chicago, but not everywhere. But it’s regular thing on the west coast…and everyone uses them. I use them once in a while, when the bathroom looks really shady, but usually I just hover or use toilet paper. Most of the time when I go to the bathroom I don’t have the time to take the liner out of the dispenser and go through the act of putting it on the seat and making sure that the middle part falls into the toilet. I swear, sometimes it feels like working one of those things is like rocket science! You know where the best toilet seat covers are? At the O’Hare airport. It completely covers the seat and you wave your hand on the sensor and it automatically moves the seat cover to a fresh one. It’s pretty cool. Just an FYI - no one has ever gotten a disease from a toilet seat - those things are there just to make you feel safe.

Hot Salsa!

When I was in SB, we went to this great hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. I got a chicharron burrito (chicharron is fried pork skin). It was DEEEEE-LICIOUS! Sure, it’s still plugging up my arteries, but it was worth it. Two little cups of green salsa were served with my burrito. I was thinking of putting some on my meal, but made sure to try it first. I dipped my fork in it, got a nice little chunk, and put it in my mouth. Then my mouth exploded from all the heat! I tried not to make a scene because I didn’t want anyone to laugh, so I started swallowing all my saliva and drank down about half of my lemonade. It was one of the hottest salsas I’ve had.

Later, I saw the guy next to me pour the green salsa onto his taco. I saw that he was about halfway done with his meal so I assumed he’d been doing this all along. I marveled at his resistance to the super-salsa. A couple minutes later one of the women I was with exclaimed, “Oh my god! This salsa’s hot!” We all laughed and the guy next to me confessed, “Yeah, I decided to try it halfway through my meal and I dumped a whole bunch of it on my taco, and I wanted to cry after eating it!” I guess I wasn’t the only one who wanted to cry!

Musubi!!!

Something we don’t have a lot of in Chicago are Hawaiian restaurants. There’s a good amount of them over in the west coast and I definitely made sure to hit at least one of them! It was pure heaven to taste that kalua pork, it was so yummy and my tummy sang a song of happiness. The spam musubi hit the spot, wrapped nicely in seaweed. Luckily I found a Hawaiian restaurant in Ontario before going to the airport so I was able to have some musubi for dinner before I left as well. Yum! I think there’s one Hawaiian restaurant here in Chicago, I’ll have to find it…

Spam Musubi

This and That…

A couple observations from my trip so far…

- I forgot how much I love driving on the open highways of California late at night with my windows open and the radio blasting. It’s such a great feeling!

- For some reason, I’ve seen a lot of stray animals here. I asked my clients if there were usually a lot of stray animals around, but they said it was unusual. In one day, I saw two dogs crossing a busy street together (it was cute, they were watching out for each other), a beautiful stray dog hanging outside my client building (he was drinking water from a bowl they put out for him, they’ve been feeding him pork chops and dog biscuits “he hates french fries, we tried giving him those” I guess he’s been coming around for a while) and there was a cat hanging out by my car in the hotel parking lot. I came up slowly by him and he “meowed” at me and then ran away, I then noticed that he was favoring his back leg and only used the other three to run.

- The weather here is GORGEOUS.

- Saw the last 20 minutes of the premiere of “Friday Night Lights” and it was pretty riveting. I got attached to the characters quickly and the action and story sucked me in. I’ll definitely watch it again.

- Is it just me or does hottie Mario Lopez look like a serial killer anytime he’s up against the judges on “Dancing with the Stars”?

He’s Growing Up Without Me!

Benjamin learned how to hold his bottle on his own last week while I was gone in San Jose. However, he gets bored of it easily and usually lets the bottle fall to his side if we aren’t paying attention.

10 Favorite Buildings

Most of my list is buildings where I’ve lived. Each of them holds so many memories, and each has its own kind of memories. My childhood home is my favorite, I loved growing up there. In Long Beach, we had so much fun, we experienced a different kind of lifestyle and that’s where we spent the first year of our marraige. My apartment in college was a blast, there were definitely good times there…

1) The house I grew up in
2) My current home
3) My old apartment in Long Beach
4) The Illini Union
5) Wrigley Field
6) My office downtown
7) The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach 8) The old Elm Street apartment
9) Canyon Lodge at Mammoth Mountain
10) Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at Disney World

Off to San Bernardino!

Yeah, I’m off again. Poor Benjamin won’t see his mommy for the next 5 days. *cries*

Oh well, at least I have my LOST Season II DVDs to keep me company. The season premiere is this Wednesday! I’m so excited!!!
