Let’s Talk Harry Potter!

I remember mentioning some time ago that I had finished reading “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince”.

Here’s my quick spoiler-free review:

I liked the book. I finished it in about 4 days as I was traveling and spent a lot of time in airports. I didn’t love it, and #4 is still my favorite.

I think my biggest gripe about the book is that it’s pretty anticlimactic. Sure, a lot of stuff happens and there is one big thing at the end, but all in all, I felt like I was reading a prequel to “THE LAST BIG HARRY POTTER BOOK”. It all seemed like things that are getting us ready for the events of the final book.

But I enjoyed it. It’s great to see the characters mature and act like teenagers, though there were some moments that made me feel a little weird - this is definitely not a book your 8 year old should be reading! It works well in the Potter universe, and anyone who is a fan of the books will love this one.

I can’t wait until the last book. I have a feeling, based on all the little hints in #6, that we’re going to be blown away!

With all that said (which was nothing really), I’d love to start a discussion in the comments to talk about the book. There’s a lot of questions and things we can talk about, and I don’t want it out here if people don’t want the surprises spoiled for them. I’ll pose a couple questions in the first comment - feel free to talk about it or add your own questions/comments/reviews within the comments!

Put ICE in Your Phone

Ever since the bombings in London, I’ve heard about putting emergency contact information on your phone in case something happens to you and they need to call your next of kin. I’ve also seen the traffic messageboards on the highway talking about it, too.

A British paramedic came up with the idea of asking cell phone users to input an entry into their cellular phonebook called ICE for “in case of emergency.” Accompanying that acronym would be the name and phone numbers of the person who should be called if something has happened to the owner of the phone.

USA Today

I think this is a great idea. There’s no harm in doing it - you’re just adding one more name to your addressbook. But if something were to happen, then any emergency personnel who respond will immediately know who to call, and they’ll be able to know if you have any allergies or something in your medical history.

So take a couple seconds and put that ICE contact information in your phone. I’ve put in my dad’s home phone#. I was thinking of putting in Dave’s info, but if we were in a car accident together, it wouldn’t help if my ICE info was his cell phone number. I know it’s a bit morbid, but its true.

The Chicago Comicon Extravaganza

Watch out…a really long post coming up!

I was so totally wiped out after going to the Wizard World Comic Book Convention a couple weeks ago. I’m just not used to waking up at 7am on my weekends and walking around all day. But I’m happy, last year I didn’t get to go to all three days of the convention because we were moving into my new house. I wanted to go, but Dave had reminded me about this stupid thing called ‘priorities’ so I just ended up going on one day.

This year was pretty great. I was excited to see some people I’ve seen at previous conventions, and also to see people I hadn’t met yet. I’ve joined a message board here and there (I truly wouldn’t be an internet whore if I didn’t) and was curious to see if these people lived up to their personalities on the message board. So, since it’s hard for me to tell it all in a regular format, I’ll give you my highlights of the weekend….which will be pretty much ALL of my weekend since everything was a highlight. That, and I talk too much.

- First of all, thanks to my comic book life-partner, Fatima. We’ve been going to this thing for about 8 years now, and it’s always been at least the two of us. It’s a bit like our quality time together. Three days of geeky fun. We work well together, maneuvering around the convention floor, asking for sketches, talking to creators and fans…Fatima is always there with me. She is the one of the best two sisters ever!

- Pat Loika is the coolest. All the talk about him being the nicest, most generous, coolest cat around isn’t just hype. I’ve known Pat for several years now - I think we ran across each other blogs a while ago, and I was excited to see someone talk about comics on their blog. We’ve been in touch and were even at the same panel at the Long Beach convention last year, but we never met. I’m so happy that I finally got to meet him and that he ended up being everything that everyone said he would be. I know he didn’t have the best weekend, since there was a lot of external crap going on, but nonetheless, I’m happy he went to the con and I appreciate everything he did for so many people while he was there. He truly is one of the best people I know. Get out there and purchase “Path to Armageddon”!

- Jim Lee, my comic book god, was there. I caught a glimpse of him at the very end of the convention. I could have waited in line for him, but I’ve already met him and had my picture taken with him, so I wanted to share the wealth. I also heard he wasn’t doing sketches, so I didn’t want to bother getting my books signed or anything. I’m still on the quest of my Holy Grail of convention sketches, which would be a Psylocke sketch my Jim Lee (are you out there Jim? Do you hear me?!?!?). Ohh, it just gives me the shivers just thinking about it! *shivers*

- The convention seemed less packed that recent years. I don’t know if it was because of the dates, or because there were4 days of the convention this year (I didn’t go to the first) or just because it was a slow year for comics. Wizard still said it was their most successful show ever, so I’ll believe whatever lies they tell me and hope that next year there will be more people. I’m not totally complaining, though, because less people means less lines for me to wait in.

- I saw Jason Mewes again this year (Jay from Mallrats and Dogma). On Saturday, I passed by him as he was walking into a panel that Kevin Smith was hosting, and I asked him for a picture. Marian came with us on Sunday, and I told her that he and Kevin Smith were signing autographs, and she wanted to go and take a picture. (the line was closed to people who had signed up in the morning) We went over there to take a picture and she stood on the side, waiting for the right moment. He made eye contact with her and made a weird face for her camera. She took the picture, and then he pointed to me and Fatima and said, “You’re the girls from yesterday, aren’t you?” Fatima and I nodded, and he gave us a wink and a smile. I walked away feeling like a stalker. However, Marian complained that he made a weird face for her picture and she wanted one of him smiling, so we went back. I stood off to the side as she went back and waited for a moment to catch his attention. When he did, he was like, “Back again?” and Marian said, “I want a picture of you smiling!”. She held up her camera and took a picture right as he was giving her the finger. It was awesome.

- Late last year I fixed up some graphics for my friend Goddard, and his thanks was a promise to do anything I wanted him to do for five minutes at the Chicago Con. I took him up on it and had him dress up as Tigger, from Winnie the Pooh. Now, there are a lot of people who dress up for the convention, but normally these people dress up as Storm Troopers, X-Men, Ghostbusters or anime characters. Tigger just doesn’t have a big representation in the comic book world. So I had Goddard dress up on my old Tigger costume, which was a size too small for him, itchy, and very warm. But as soon as he put it on, it was like giving him some sort of superhero potion. He started to walk with a strut, he was handing out high fives, and he became a total rock star - he couldn’t get 10 feet without people taking a picture with him. What made it even better was that Wendy was with us, who was dressed up as Red Sonja, chainmail and all, and so the pictures with the two of them are hilarious. We also made sure to take a picture of Tigger checking out porn in one of the booths.

- There are so many cool people I had met, that it’s hard for me to name them all, but I’ll try…Andria (who had a kickass Soulfire costume - wings and all), Ryan (all of them), Aaron (who gave me free Hobbit Feet because I was talking about how awesome they were), John, Peter, Brian, Wayne, Nathan, Kent (who did an awesome Psylocke sketch for me), Kari, Christian, Adam, Alysha, Colin, Shannon, Tessana, Shane (Cardinals suck!), Nick, MoMa, Jester, Cbei, Madmonkey, Thudpucker (dammit, I forgot your real names), David Thornton, Saul (we never got a picture of you and the Asian Girl Gang! Next year!), and lots more, but I can’t recall the names.

- Also, it was great to see some old faces, including Antonio, Noble, Mystique and her husband, Dave (who let me keep the tigger costume under the table), Goodman, Chris, Kristin (who was Jason Mewes’ special guest for a day, that lucky bitch), Alysha, Colin, Ryan “Odie” (I had no idea who Cheeks was talking about when he was saying “Odie”, then I realized it was Ryan), “cheeks”, David Mack, Rafael and Mike “the Chief”.

- 19. What’s nineteen? The number of people who passed by us and smelled like ass crack. Next year, Irish Spring should come by and hand out samples on the first day of the con.

- Raven Gregory rocks. Go out and buy his comic, “The Gift”, it’s like the Twilight Zone on crack! From the moment I met him, he was warm and funny and I immediately felt comfortable enough to joke around with him. Probably my Raven highlight was Friday night when I was threatening to tell Fata incriminating stories about him, and he kept on saying “Nooooooo, c’mon, please? Don’t! Nooooooooooooooo. Don’t tell Li’l Yano! She doesn’t need to know. Nooooooo!” We were laughing so hard at that! Eventually, due to the amount of alcohol in his system and our super Yano sister persuasive powers, he gave in and told Fatima the goods. And it was good…

- I’ve got a ton of pictures from the convention. Mostly of the statues (I love the statues, but just don’t have the cash flow to buy them, so I take pictures of them) but I also tried to take pictures with everyone I met.

- I didn’t get too many sketches this year. I’ve been a little low on the funds, and for some reason, I had no time. What else was I doing? I have no idea! The three days seemed to have just disappeared. But I did get some pretty good ones from a wide assortment of people.

- Keep your eye out for a book called “starting Over”, written by Craig Maloof and pencilled by Michelle Walters. I’ve read the first couple scripts and it sounds like a great book. Want another reason to get it? It stars ME! Yes, ME! Well, the character looks nothing like me, but she IS named Christine Estacio. She’s a tough detective who is rough around the edges and acts before she thinks. Not really like me, but a little bit. My partner is some guy named Pat Loika. The name sounds familiar but I can’t place it.

- A big thank you goes to Kat Amano, who brought me some books that she had been wanting to give away. She is such a sweetheart, and is even prettier in person than in pictures. She was so awesome to lug around that pile of books in her luggage to bring to the convention for me! I also talked to her father, Jeff Amano, who was really cool and thought that we were from Hawaii because Fatima was wearing a shirt that said Hawaii on it. I like it when people think we’re from Hawaii. I don’t know why. Maybe because people from Hawaii seem better looking. Anyway, Jeff Amano has some pretty great genes, because his daughters Mandy and Kat are gorgeous! What a great looking family!

- Jeffery and Tonia are the cutest couple. Jeffery is a total charmer and the biggest sweetheart, and Tonia is the sexiest bitch you ever did see. On Friday night, Jeffery got up in front of all the people who were in the lobby of the Hyatt (and there were a lot, let me tell you!) and re-proposed to his wife, down on one knee and with a ring. It was the sweetest thing!

- I knew that the Brian Michael Bendis panel would be packed, so I decided to get to the room about 20 minutes early to get myself a good seat. Imagine my surprise when I get there and see that the Wizard people are turning people away from the door, because there’s no more room - not even standing room in the back. I was so disappointed! I asked security if I could maybe just squeeze in, and he said no. Next to him, I saw Brian Michael Bendis come by the door, see me and motion to security to let me and a couple of the people behind me in. As I squeezed in, I came up to him and introduced myself to him. “Hi, I’m Yano!” I said (which of course is the name I use online because I’m a ninja like that). His eyes lit up with recognition as he shook my hand, “Hey! How are you? There’s some space in the front if you just want to sit on the floor or something.” I went up to the front of the room, extremely aware that everyone could see me. Then I started hearing whispers of ‘Yano! Yano!’ come from several places near the front rows. Turns out I knew some of the people who were in the front rows, and Jeffery, wonderful Jeffery, offered me his seat in the front row. The panel was pretty cool. Bendis is such an awesome guy, he acknowledged all his fans and his message board members, staying later to take pictures and talk with people.

- Redpac and Tall Steve came with us on Friday. I gave Dan one of the extra sketchbooks we brought, and he went around asking for free sketches. He’s got a pretty impressive collection now, all involving a character and ‘pie’. Sometimes we lost Redpac and TallSteve, but were always able to find them again by looking ebove the rest of the heads at the con and finding TallSteve. We’re not kidding. He’s tall.

- Some of you may remember that I won a contest to get myself made into a character in a comic book. I stopped by the NYC Mech table and got to see Andy MacDonald’s work for their upcoming issue, and it looks incredible! Fata and I were amazed by how much it actually looks like me. I can’t wait to scan it and show you guys the art once the book comes out. A big thanks to writer Ivan Brandon for starting up the contest. These guys were awesome!

- I had a moment of fangirl giddiness when I went up to Ale Garza’s table in the artist alley to check out his stuff. He’s finishing up his run on Batgirl, which is one of my favorite comics. When he saw me he said that he recognized me, and I told him that several years ago he did a sketch for me. He then said it wasn’t that, he remembered me from when I posted on his website. Which I did twice. I was surprised he even remembered me! It made me happy. I should have asked for a picture or a sketch, but I was in a daze.

- Taki Soma is as cool, witty and pretty as I thought she would be, if not more. She definitely kicks ass! Her art is amazing, and I wish her only the best - we need more women behind the scenes in comics, and Taki is perfect for it.

- Of course we hung out at the Aspen booth again this year. I love seeing these guys every year. We also got a bonus, because Liz was back! She told us that she was moving away last year, so we took bunches of pictures and got all teary eyed, but she’s moved back and the world is all right again. Peter, of course, was as silly as ever. However, I’d have to say that Koi is now my favorite Aspen person just because of how much fun Fatima and I had hanging with him and Mark Morales in the Hyatt. Mark is hilarious, I feel bad that Koi was the subject of our teasing, but he was a good sport!

- The artist alley was PACKED this year. It should be called ‘The Artist Neighborhood’ because there were actually 3 different areas for artists this year. It’s great that there are so many people out there that are doing comics, I only wish there were more people out there *buying* them. There was a huge assortment of artists there, from big names like Greg Horn, Josh Middleton and David Mack to people who were just starting out, trying to find their big break. Unfortunately, my cash flow is low so I didn’t get as many books as I wanted to, or I would have gotten TONS because there was some really great stuff there.

Hmm..that’s about all I remember. I’m sure that there’s more, but in Yano time, it was YEARS ago. I had a great time, and I can’t wait til next year!

Anniversary #2

Today is our second wedding anniversary, and for the second year in a row, I won’t see my husband. Maybe if I’m lucky I’ll see him right before midnight when my plane lands, but I’m not holding my breath.

Actually, this year, I was supposed to be home for our anniversary. But life likes to beat you on the head when you start putting your head in the clouds and make *gasp* plans, so it seems that once again, I’ll be heading out to a city I will not speak of. I’m not in the best moods, far from being in any sort of mood to talk to anyone. I no longer want to talk about what I should do or what I should say or why I’m still where I’m at. All that was running through my head yesterday, and today, I’ll only be thinking one thing:

I miss Dave.

I’m tired of all my travel drama, aren’t you? I know, I know, I could have said ‘no’, but anyone who knows me knows it’s not as easy as that.

Anyway, a couple honorable mentions before I go on with the rest of my post:

Sam B - I’m sorry for leaving you on the street talking to yourself. At least I gave you fair warning that I was leaving. I just didn’t want to talk about it anymore, much less have someone question why I’m doing what I’m doing. I also apologize for the nasty things I said before I left. I know it’s not *you*. You were just trying to help and understand.

Sammy Joe - Thank you so much for answering all my questions, giving me advice and calming me down. I’m so happy we’ve kept in touch, especially now. You’re awesome! You’ve helped me believe that things can happen, that my life is in my hands and I don’t have to be afraid of what lies ahead. I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and people like me, dammit!

There were others I talked to today that lent an open ear, and I thank you all.

But the #1 person that I need to thank is Dave. Not just for being so understanding about me not being here today, but throughout all this craziness that’s been happening in my life, he’s been there for me. It’s not easy being the husband that’s left alone all the time, but he’s supported me through it all. I’m such a lucky girl to be married to such a great guy!

These last two years have been incredible. We’ve been growing together and although there have been occasional bumps in the road, we’ve come to learn how to better understand each other. Sometimes I find it so hard to believe that I’d found someone like dave, much less married him. We’re so incredibly different, yet we fit so well together. Sure, we may fight over the remote everyone once in a while, or who is supposed to do what chores…but in the end, we make it work, and we make it work well. We are so full of love for each other it’s hard to put into words - well, words that wouldn’t make everyone reading this throw up from all the sugary cheesey sweetness of it.

It’s hard to believe that its been two whole years, time has really flown by and so much has happened in our lives, but it seems just like yesterday I was standing in the back of the church getting teary eyed when I saw Dave near the altar waiting for me. *sigh*

So happy anniversary Dave, I’m sorry I’m not home but every minute I’m away I’ll be thinking of you.

*cries*

Aruba Vacation

I’ve been back from my vacation for a couple days, but I’ve been too lazy to write anything about my vacation. I was going to write a TON of stuff for this, but really, who wants to read pages and pages about my Aruba vacation? I’ll just give a couple of the highlights.

- Where do we go for our first meal in Aruba? Pizza Hut! Our second meal? McDonald’s! After that, we had some other kinds of food, like the Caribbean place, the Argentinian place and the Filipino place. However, I don’t understand why we had to go have Filipino food since we eat it all the time, but hey, Filipino parents are weird like that!

- We went on vacation with Dave’s parents. Dave’s mom works for an airline, so we got a pretty great deal on the airfare and rode first class on the way down to Aruba.

- This whole Natalie Holloway thing is giving Aruba a bad rep. It’s a shame that the girl is missing, but Aruba is actually a very safe and clean island. There’s police patrolling at night, and the streets are clean, with garbage cans on every block. We were talking to a couple of the locals and they told us that you could walk from one part of the island to another without having to worry, that they never lock their doors at night.

- On the license plates in Aruba, it says “one Friendly Island”, and it definitely is. Anyone who was a local was extremely nice and nice to talk to. People seemed genuinely happy.

- Iguanas run wild in Aruba. It’s pretty cool. I was tempted to pick them up, put them on my shoulders and rub their chins, but I don’t know how much a wild iguana would like that.

- Our hotel had it’s own private island that a shuttle would take us to. It was pretty cool - not packed, the food was great, the water not too cold and there was good snorkeling around the edges. Iguanas, pelicans, hermit crabs and flamingos were all over the place.

- During one day on our island, they were having some sort of bikini shoot. Models and photographers were all over the place, and Dave and his dad were in heaven! Another bonus for Dave and his dad? Topless sunbathers. Though some of them were older women, there were several young, buxom women who were sunbathing topless and provided the men with plenty of eye candy.

- Dave and I went snorkeling on our own a couple times. I don’t know how to swim, but I can snorkel pretty well. However, I have this fear of the water (mostly of big things under the water) and there were times when I’d see some really big fish and I’d have a mini panic attack underwater. I really had to pay attention to regulating my breathing so I didn’t start flailing around. Snorkeling is fun and it’s cool to see the pretty fish, but sometimes my imagination takes control and Jaws is just around the corner.

- I really wanted to go to the Butterfly Farm that was on the island, but knew that no one else would want to go. I decided to take a bus to get there, since taking a taxi would cost some money. Because of the whole Natalie Holloway thing, Dave and his parents told me not to go, but I convinced them that I’ll be on public transportation during the day, and I wasn’t going far. So I had my own little adventure on the bus with the locals, looking for the butterfly farm. I overshot it on the bus and went to the Wyndham to ask for directions. Turns out that they had a power outage there, so their workers were walking around with flashlights. It was pretty cool. They told me I missed the farm by about a quarter of a mile, so I had to walk down the road. During my walk I encountered several iguanas, one that was as big as Godzilla. It was pretty intimidating! But I finally got to the farm and took tons of pictures and learned about the life cycle of several butterflies. Of course, I took a ton of pictures. It was cool.

- We also went parasailing in Aruba (where you’re riding behind a speedboat in a parachute). We took a speedboat shuttle to another speedboat, and had to do one of those “jump from one boat to another” deals. I pretended I was an international spy, jumping from our shuttle to the main boat - even though they were right next to each other. However, it was so windy up there that I got a little motion sick - I didn’t throw up or anything, but I definitely got a headache. Dave did, too, which accounted for the lack of conversation while we were up there. But it was really awesome to fly up so high above the island, so high that we could see the other coast of the island and the Caribbean waters past it. Flying above the waters we could see the different coral formations and the blue waters. I even saw a turtle swimming by. Parasailing was a cool experience, except for the motionsickness part.

- There was a thunderstorm in Aruba during our vacation. Aruba’s a desert, and outside of the hurricane belt, so they don’t get too much rain. But as soon as I saw lightning and that telltale smell of coming rain, I knew it was going to be a good storm. It rained, hard and in buckets. I was thinking that the rest of our vacation was ruined. But then, it stopped after 15 minutes and that was it!

- It also rained on our first day. The sun was shining (and let me tell you, it was HOT since we were so close to the equator) and I was tanning on the island (because if you’ve ever seen my Redpac-white legs, you know I’d need it). I saw several dark clouds come in, and the sun was in and out for a couple hours. Then, as I was wondering if my skin was hot enough to cook eggs because the sun was so bright, it started to rain. Just a couple drops at first. Nothing to bother me too much. That, and the sun was still out. But then it was a pretty steady rain. A steady, cool rain. The surprising thing was that the sun was still out, in full force. The rainclouds were to the side of the sun. I looked at my fellow sunbathers and they just stayed where they were. So I just lay there, catching my rays while getting drenched (and cooled off) by the rain. It was a pretty weird experience.

- The waters of Aruba are so clear that you could be in neck deep water and still see your toes.

- There were people from all over the world visiting Aruba. I heard people speaking Japanese, Dutch (Aruba’s official language is Dutch), Australian, Spanish and all sorts of other

- Dave’s dad and I went to go see the show “Let’s Go Latin” one night. Dave and his mother were too flakey to go. It was a really entertaining show, with acrobats and lots of dancing girls in fantastic costumes. The singers had amazing voices, singing the hits of Gloria Estefan, Celia Cruz, Jennifer Lopez, Cheyenne and Ricky Martin.

- I did a bit of shopping, mostly for souvenirs. The cool thing is that even though the official currency of Aruba is the florin, they accept US currency also. One US dollar equals 1.75 in Aruban florins. So it was weird to go to McDonalds and see that a sundae costs 2.70. However, that only translates to about $1.50 in US money, which isn’t too bad. However, I was running out of reading material and I wanted to buy a magazine. I picked up a copy of “Marie Claire” and the price on the cover said $3.50. I went up to the counter and she told me it costs $8. I asked her if it was florins, but she said, “No, dollars” Turns out that magazines cost a bit more out there. Bah! I didn’t end up buying it.

That’s about it for my vacation. We spent most of our time on the beaches rather than touring the island. Aruba has some beautiful white sand beaches that aren’t crowded at all. It was very relaxing, and just what I needed after all the stress I’ve been under. I would definitely go there again, and probably will, since Dave has named it “My favorite place for beaches”. I think it’s because of the topless sunbathers and models on the beach. *wink*

Happy Birthday Claudine!

A quick HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my awesome sister Claudine. I have no idea how old she turns today because I never remember how old my sisters are, but I’m pretty sure she’s getting on in years. She’s getting married next year and she has a HUGE test coming this week, so of course, her wedding has been taking priority. Heh heh.

Love you See-star!

She’s Baaaaaaack!

Back from Aruba! I’m tired, which is strange considering I’ve been napping and doing nothing for the whole week in paradise…

More Tipping Advice

I meant to write this earlier in response to Master Foley:

You know when it really pays to tip? When you’re gambling.

The first trip to Vegas I went to see Mystere at Treasure Island. Show got out around 11:30pm. We hot the craps table and everything is packed. We squeeze in and play. After a few good rolls I’m up and the dealers are doing well so I throw a buck on the hard 8 for the crew. It loses. The stickman thanks me for the bet and says, “I truly appreciate the gesture but if you want to bet for me I’d like you bet the Pass Line.” He did in such a sincere and polite manner I started to bet the Pass line for the crew right next to mine.

The table got hot and every point hit they were getting a $7-$10 tip, most of it the house’s money. The dealers noticed this. When I didn’t have bets down or forgot to pick up winnings they would point it out to me. At one point they began to push the dice to the shooter and yanked them back as he was about to pick them up. “Sir, your hard 8 is down, would you like to bet it again?” Now everyone is looking at me like I’m the highest roller in the joint and damn it felt good. The dealers are laughing with me, taking care of me like I was Affleck on a gambling bender.

Played for about 2 hours, left up about $300-$400 or so, and had a great time. The crew made $100 plus, again mainly the house’s money. Tip your dealers, they will take care of you.

So Long…

…and thanks for all the fish.

Miss Yano will be back soon to once again take care of her kiddies. Once again I had a blast being a guest poster. I hope everyone enjoyed my posts. I definitely learned a lot from my Tipping? post.

I was disappointed that Yano didn’t post a recap of her annual trip to WWC before she left. In that absence I’ll post, for your viewing, my picture of Bridget Silvestri and me.

She is so much fun. I hope to see you guys the next time Yano takes a vacation.
