The Yank Learns About Confederate Memorial Day
Sweet Tea Count for the Trip: 9 glasses. Bathroom trips because of sweet tea: 24.
Um, not like I’m counting.
We went to lunch at this awesome little place in Jackson called Two Sisters Kitchen. Basically, it was a big old house that had the furniture in the living room cleaned out, with several tables set up for a buffet. The dining room and upstairs had a bunch of tables, and the backyard was a big dining area. The food was excellent and the dessert was even better. Yummy bread pudding!
I was downing yet another glass of sweet tea, and my coworker, who’s from the south, said, ‘You like sweet tea?’
Did the look of complete happiness on my face give it away?
‘Yeah, it’s the best thing about coming to the south!’
‘You Yankees aren’t supposed to like sweet tea! You’re genetically supposed to dislike it!’ he said.
I am? I’ve been labelled many things in my life - chink, flip, Asian, nerd, geek, bitch, drama queen….but this is the first time I’ve ever been called a ‘Yankee’. I smiled, sipped my tea, and told him that I just couldn’t help myself. I loved the south for making my life a little bit happier with its invention of sweet tea. And for having chicken and dumplings as an option for a ‘vegetable’ with your meal.

This week, our clients were off on Monday. We heard it was because of Arbor day. Isn’t that awesome? To be off on Arbor day?
Then we discovered the truth. They were off because of Confederate Memorial Day. I guess in Mississippi (and some of the rest of the south) they have their own holidays. Lucky!
Wait a second, am I still in the US? It’s like another world down here.
It’s a good place to be isn’t it.
I was most definately born in the wrong state.
Okay, as a real Yankee, I get SO FREAKING ANNOYED by Southerners who consider anyone from north or west of the Maxon-Dixon line to be a Yankee. When I was in North Carolina for grad school it was the same thing. A classmate who was from freaking Montana was called a Yankee!
Let me set everyone straight. A Yankee is a New Englander. Please. With a stretch I could include New Jersey and New York as well. But no way, no how are midwesterners Yankees. As if.

I thought a Yankee was someone who played on that baseball team, AND I am from the South!
