The post-pregnancy phenomenon I've been dreading is starting, something that I thought I might be able to avoid - hair loss.
See, when you're pregnant, the hormones that are produced make your hair all beautiful and shiny, and it rarely falls out. I don't really remember my hair getting exactly shiny, but then again, it was already pretty healthy. That is, the parts I didn't burn off with all my dyeing and bleaching.
My friends had warned me that it would happen - that clumps of my hair would come out in the shower and freak me out. That it would seem like hair was everywhere...
But I never expected it to be like this! Since I only got one haircut during my pregnancy, my hair is REALLY long. So when I'm in the shower, it looks as if all my hair is falling out. I run my hands through my hair and it comes back looking l ike I've turned into the wolf girl. I collect a clump of hair the size of a baseball. The floor in the bathroom is covered with hair by the time I'm done combing it.
I've taken to keeping my hair in a bun on top of my head because Benjamin likes to grab at it, so I don't really see the hair throughout the day. But every once in a while I'll see my poor baby's fingers tangled up in one of my hairs and I feel so bad! My hair is attacking my baby!
Luckily, I've got a lot of hair, I'm not really worried about getting bald or anything.
So all you mothers out there - when does this stop?
Posted by Yano at July 3, 2006 12:17 PMSorry I don't know. This one I managed to avoid. You might consider another cute short hair cut. Benboy can't grab it as easily and it makes hair look thicker than a long cut.
Posted by: SusanG on July 3, 2006 04:13 PMNot that I know, personally, but what if you keep taking the prenatal vitamins? I know that I try to take a good dose of vitamins everyday and the regular hair shedding I used to have, isn't as bad.
Posted by: Texx on July 3, 2006 06:03 PMThat happened to me around 4 mos post partum, but it seems to be growing back right away. The problem is that I will now have these 'bangs' that will take forever to catch up with the rest. The prenatal vitamins didn't help the hairloss but it may work for you.
Posted by: Irene on July 3, 2006 06:34 PMoh its still going, and she's nearing 1 year! it sucks. i hate seeing all the hair in the drain after a shower, or even all the hair on the floor when im done fixing it. yeah and the vitamins didnt help.

Posted by: Dina on July 4, 2006 02:02 AMIs this what I have to look forward to? I never heard that. Is this one of those things people don't tell you? I found out there was a lot of those things as the pregnancy moved along. My hair is way short anyways..I hope I don't lose anymore! I'm letting it grow back out! Oh well, thanks for the heads up.
Posted by: Crispix on July 4, 2006 10:30 PMHmm I managed to avoid that one too, it never happened with my first baby, and it doesn't seem to be happening this time either. Or maybe it's just that I have so much darn hair on my head, i'd never notice anywayz lol.
Posted by: Jennifer ( The Jen!!!) on July 5, 2006 01:20 AMNobody told me about this one when I was pregnant and sure enough when Lucas was four months old, I started losing hair. I was so completely freaked out that I called the doctor---my hair has been one of my best assets all of my life. The nurse told me it was a normal part of the post partum period. I swear I lost half of my hair--both times. It grew back in, of course, and I was a frizzy mess for a few months.
Take your vitamins and eat lots of protein!!
Posted by: janet on July 5, 2006 08:53 AMI dont know if this applies to you or not but when my mom stopped breast feeding, her hair madness ceased and everything went back to normal
Posted by: TheDivineMissN on July 5, 2006 03:16 PMI think it took a couple of months... I kept thinking I would be bald, but no... despite what seemed to be beginning of some serious hair loss, merely was shedding!
Posted by: Kristin on July 5, 2006 09:37 PM*sigh* my hair loss started a little after 3 months, and after about 9-10 months i finally started to "normal out"...my main problem was growing out all the new baby hair sprouting out in the front!
Posted by: thaihoney on July 6, 2006 10:56 AMMine started about 3-4 months after my son was born, and then my hair started to grow back when he was about 10-11 months. Boy was it scary to see all that hair inching towards the drain in the shower. Eeek!
