Baby Shopping is Hard!

Dave and I spent our day off yesterday at the babystore, adding baby stuff to our registry.

I've done research on and off and also sat with my cousins who already had babies, trying to figure out what I need and what I don't need. But there is just so much stuff at times it seems overwhelming - which brands are the best? What's the safest? I only want the best for my baby (but of course, everyone does, right?).

Stuff that I'm still wavering on are strollers/travel systems (I want something lightweight, but sturdy, as well as something that the baby can use for a while), diaper disposal systems (some people swear by the Diaper Genie, others say that the Diaper Champ is the way to go, then there's the Diaper Dekor...), a glider for me (we sat in some of them at the store, they were SO comfy!) and bottles (I was told by some people that their babies were finicky with bottles and would only use one kind.)

This whole registry thing is an interesting experience with Dave. I was leaning toward a really cutesy Winnie the Pooh theme with soft pastel colors, but Dave has had his heart set on raising a baseball superstar that I settled for a sports theme. So our little guy is going to be surrounded by soccer balls, footballs, and baseballs. I did, however, manage to get cute little baseball playing teddie bear sheets.

However, I don't want to get a ton of blue clothes. I'm not raising a smurf here. So we tried putting in some green, yellow and purple things. But it's so nice when everything matches! However, the yellow duckie bathrobe was a must for us!

We couldn't put hanging clothes on the registry, but there were so many adorable outfits. I had to stop myself from just outright buying them - I've heard that for the first few months the baby rarely wears outfits anyway. Dave did go a little crazy with the bibs, he really loved the ones that said things like, "Daddy's Little Sports Superstar" and cute little animals playing sports.

Of course, I'm planning on going to the store on my own so I can sneak in some things that I want on the registry, just like I did with our wedding registry. *evil grin*

Boy, this kid is gonna get a lot of crap!

I remember registering at Babies R Us for a couple of things. David and I came home and needed a nap. Bibs are a great idea - clothing not so much b/c you have NO idea how big your child is going to be. We ended up using the 0-3 month size for about a week. Unsolicited advice - ignore me; am at my parents' house losing my mind!

Don't forget the breast pump, it will come in handy - Avent brand.

Heya yano. Here's some advice for the little yano-spawn...

1. The glider is great for both you and Dave when you're rockin' your child to sleep--mainly because it's so comfortable, that you can actually doze in it too! some babies really need that perpetual motion to get them snoozin. A baby swing might also be good too.

2. diaper genie helps a little, but not sure if you really need it. I mean, it's nice to put them somewhere, but it's not like you really want to STORE them for any amount of time, right?

3. when Samuel was a baby, we had a stroller carrier combo. The carrieir locked into the top portion of the stroller, and of course could be removed for your standard baby-totin'. Then, when the baby outgrows the carrier, the stroller can be used like normal, without the carrier on the top. Of course, it's nice to have big wheels and good suspension--for whizzing through the supermarket [Dave].

4. Bibs are prettry cheap, and you can never have too many. Blankets, one-sies, etc. as well. It all depends on your laundry cycle. I'm guessing you don't do laundry EVERY day, right?

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know!

p.s.-The first time I submitted this post, I got this message:

What's up with that?

Ah--strollers! Get a good one or more than one--to jog or walk in the rain. We had an Aprica 20 years ago and it was great but at that time there were not strollers with the rain covers. I discovered them in Scotland when Kaley was a baby and thought it completely ridiculous that you couldn't find one in Seattle, of all places. But now I see they finally have them here.

Good strollers give freedom!

I too was overwhelmed with all the choices. I read user reviews at Amazon and epinions, then got the Baby Bargains book to help me choose.

So, hey! You're having a boy? I must have missed your post/entry about that. :-)

New reader here. Don't know where I stumbled from :). Been coming for a week or so. Anyhow found this an interesting post as I have 2 kids, a 6 year old (boy) and a soon to be 6 month old (girl). I swore by certain things with the #1 only to find things NOT work out for #2. I went with a travel system with #1 and ended up getting 3 more strollers after. Yeah 3. Crazy I know but the system was too bulky. Get a baby carrier most definitely. It'll be your best friend. I swear by the Baby Bjorn Active Carrier. The Medela Breast Pump is a good one. You can often "rent" them from your hospital if you want to try out different models. #1 I used Avent bottles and I thought it would be the same with #2, not so. She's into the Playtex ventaires if she even takes a bottle at all, being strictly breastfed. #1 didn't take to the breast at all and was strictly formula. Diapers another hit and miss. #1 we used Huggies b/c Pampers didn't work. #2 I tried everything on the market, Huggies leaked, Luvs leaked, Toys R Us leaked. Pampers worked but there's not much "stretch" to them so we're using the Costco Kirkland brand. I must be so discouraging but really it's rather hit or miss and everything is different with EVERY baby. Advice is definitely nice and encouraging but you won't know what will really work for your bundle of joy until he is here. So I say go with the basics and big furniture for now. Definitely take the strollers and carseats for a "test drive" in the stores in terms of ease folding and storage wise. Feel free to email me if you have any questions :)
