Heard in a conference call today:
Pres: So next week we need to work on this [this project we've been working on] and get it done. We need to test it and make sure the data works, and you need to work on the script of what I'm supposed to do in the demo.
Me: Well, you know I'm not going to be here next week, right?
Pres: What?
Me: I'm out next week.
Pres: (joking) What, did you get married or something?
Me: Well, yeah, I did, but the honeymoon is the WEEK after next week. Next week F---- scheduled me to be in San Francisco.
Pres: All week?
Me: Yup.
Pres: But you have nights free to work on this stuff, right?
Me: Uh...yeah, I guess so.
Pres: Yeah, this is stuff that you can just do when you get back to your room.
Co-Worker: Yeah, Christine, the 6pm to 2am time frame is open!
Me: I guess I'll take the second shift.
Pres: Good. We'll work on it next week.
Hmpf!!!
C'mon!? Why didn't you say no!? Christine! This is nuts!
Posted by: Amy on February 20, 2004 11:21 AMOkay anytime I start to complain about my job (which is rare bc I love my job) I'm gonna think that I could have your job which I would not be able to handle. Although I know this is how you are I agree with Amy above, why didn't you say no?
Posted by: Melinda on February 20, 2004 11:30 AMholy crap. that's just wrong. didn't sound like he had ANY idea that what he just asked for was unfair. you should've asked if there was a bonus in it for you.
Posted by: chris on February 20, 2004 11:44 AMOne of the hardest things I had to learn was where my job stops and my life began. Unfortunately it almost cost me my marriage before I realized that "Hey, will this employer be there for me when my husband leaves and my family is broken apart?"
I agree with Chris, is there a bonus? What about OT or comp time? This is the kind of crap that you need to keep notes on and then at review time nail his ass! GRRRR. Opps, I forgot I have my HR hat on.
Posted by: Pridey on February 20, 2004 01:16 PMOMG! they're totally taking advantage of you! You gotta put your foot down sometime... You gotta draw the line between your life/sanity and your work... be strong.. *arrrgh grrrr* hehehe. ^_^
Posted by: bumblebootie on February 20, 2004 01:56 PMOh heelz naw!! Man, you are to nice...they should give you a raise damn it.
Posted by: razzmatazz on February 20, 2004 04:06 PMPlease tell me you're paid by the hour.
And tell your boss they don't have email or telephones in Hawaii, ok? He sounds clueless enough that he might just buy it.
Posted by: Noelle on February 20, 2004 06:27 PMOMG, what an ass. Sorry chica, you need to tell him where to go honey. There is no reason you should have to work all day and at night.Crummy boss you have my dear...it's like Pridey said - family first. But I also know how hard it is to speak up & say "no". You will find a place where you are appreciated & not overworked one day! Stay strong girlfriend.
