So I've been playing Yahoo! Pool a lot lately. There's hundreds of people that play at once. Usually I start up my own table and wait for someone to come in.
I use my yahoo id to play, and since I made it way back in 96 or something, it has the word 'Cyber' in it because back then, it didn't really mean anything bad or anything having to do with sex. But since I've been using it, I get all sorts of propositions and questions about it.
And the one thing that drives me batty is that as soon as I start playing with someone, they do the 'A/S/L?' thing. For the longest time, I had no idea what that was. I started chatting on the 'net way back in '93, but then stopped in '97, and didn't get back into it until '02 or so. So I missed that whole chat revolution that took place. But for those of you who don't know, 'A/S/L' is 'Age/Sex/Location'. EVERYONE seems to ask that.
I'm not there to find out about you or make friends. I'm there to play pool. I don't feel like chatting and I don't want to tell you if I'm married or not. But when I don't respond, people get angry or offended.
As I've said before, I'm not good at small talk. That's in real life and on the 'net as well. So this whole Yahoo! pool chat thing just isn't my style. But it IS interesting the people you'll meet on there. I've talked to people from Ireland, India, England and Australia. I've played with 40 year olds and 12 year olds. I was 'lucky' enough to see a picture of a man's privates when he said I could see a picture of him. When I said 'I'm sure you're mama is proud to know that you're showing pictures of your weewee on the internet' he said, 'Who do you think took the picture?'
Gotta love the 'net!

Posted by: kathy on February 12, 2004 02:01 PMI see why parents of teenagers have reason to worry about their kids on the internet. He's a sick puppy.
Posted by: Sue on February 12, 2004 03:25 PMYou don't know ASL? That was a big thing on IRC when we were LOL and ROFLMAO. AFAIK Yahoo chatters say it all the time.
Posted by: Mike on February 12, 2004 04:21 PMYes I hate that as well. I used to play Yahoo Literati (aka Scrabble) all the time but people there get so annoying. You can't play on a private table because the othe person always makes it feel like its your responsibility to entertain with interesting factoids about your life between moves. I used to try to arrange group tables for that very reason, but it's impossible because nobody wants to play a group game, and sometimes when you do, you end up in a GROUP discussion where people talk over your head about how quiet/rude you are because you don't want to hear about their stupid lives. And if you're openly female, forget it. Somehow just being the opposite sex is an invitation for horny, lonely, retards to hit on you. Not that there isn't a fair amount of slutty girls on Yahoo. I'm beginning to think that the only people who go there are there because they couldn't possibly pick people up in real life.
