I'm in DC now, and I had dinner with my friend Noelle. She had suggested going out for Filipino food, since she's never had it, and since I would know the best stuff to get.
It's totally bizarre going to a Filipino restaurant. I've never really been to one by choice, since I get the real thing at home, anyway. It's really weird to order the food off the menu, because I know the names, but I've never seen them written down. I saw all my favorites, like kari kari, sinigang, calderetta, pancit, crispy pata, dinuguan, bangus, etc. I couldn't decide what I wanted, and it was hard for me to describe some of the things to Noelle. She wasn't yet ready to have the dinuguan (if you knew what was in it, you'd be scared, too!), but she settled for the calderetta - beef in a tomato sauce. I went for the standard favorite, adobo. And we got the mini pork eggrolls.
I ate, and felt like I was cheating on my dad (the best Filipino cook ever). The food was good, but there's nothing like home cooking. Though the adobo was REALLY good. It was strange to order from the little Filipino auntie, who I felt like kissing on the cheek or calling her 'Tita' (auntie).
But it was a good meal. I think Noelle liked it. Of course, we talked and talked and laughed and talked until we pretty much got kicked out. The night was still young, so we went to go and get some dessert. We ordered a slice of peanut butter pie at another restaurant, and we were expecting a small piece, but the thing was a MOUNTAIN.
And of course, more talking, more laughing, more squeals of 'WHAT!?!?!' Until, once again, we closed the place down.
Good times. Good times.
So here's a pic of our peanut butter mountains...
omg those peanut butter mountains are massive!!
Posted by: Leesa on July 9, 2003 01:18 AMi love dinuguan!!
Posted by: LeeN on July 9, 2003 07:34 AMThey had to shoo us out the door. I think we should have realized when the lights went out the second time that they were trying to get us to leave! lol.
The Flip food was good! I swear that adobo had cinnamon in it. YUM!
Posted by: Noelle on July 9, 2003 08:37 AMIs it becoming a tradition with your ST friends to have massive slices of pie at a table near the window and then get kicked out of the place? :P
I think those slices of pie might be bigger than the ones we had!
I'm glad you guys had fun!!
Posted by: Denise on July 9, 2003 09:53 AMIt was a special meeting of the ST Slutz, DC chapter.
Posted by: Noelle on July 9, 2003 11:12 AMit's funny you bring that up, Christine - i've never gone to a Filipino restaurant on my own either, but i have just to try (a couple times)... and the food isn't that great... i don't even think it's cheating on your parents cooking as it's not the same. i found it too hard, too tough, too dry. you really can't cook filipino food on the fly and make it "taste just right." it takes time. nothing like good home cooked filipino food to make the tummy happy.
Posted by: Kathy on July 9, 2003 01:45 PMYou're making me hungry with talks of Filipino food!!! Mmmmm *dinugguan...* Hehehe... Glad Noelle had a great time though!
Posted by: lea on July 9, 2003 02:27 PMI've never had philipino food, will you invite me over and cook me some delicious food?
:-)
Posted by: Mona on July 9, 2003 06:58 PMWhat are you nuts?!? Yano can't cook!! You mean invite you over and have someone else make yummy food for the both of you.
Posted by: Red Headed White Devil on July 10, 2003 10:37 AMSurprisingly, when I lived in the bay area in California, Filipino restaurants were numerous and pretty good for quality sake. Especially if you hit up Daly City over there. :) I think someone should add a Filipino cookbook to Yano's wedding registry.
Posted by: Mike on July 10, 2003 07:44 PMHey, glad I checked. What a nice photo.
What's with the matching outfit? Is this the new S/T Webmistresses Gone Wild uniform? :))
Posted by: sonia on July 10, 2003 10:36 PMDenise, you, of all people, should know that I can talk about ass all night. Especially with another ass afficionado like Noelle.
Noelle, how sad that our DC chapter really only has one member - you. I'm only a part time member!
Kat, yeah, it's not the same as home!
Mona, you two can definitely come over for some food! Unfortunately, it will be spam. Well, maybe I'll make some filipino food, but I'll have to ask you to sign a waiver first.
Mike, I'm thinking of creating an Amazon wish list. Heh heh.
Sonia, my pants are actually green. But when I looked at the pics, well, i thought that me and Noelle looked like we had planned the matching outfits! But we didn't! Really!
Posted by: Yano on July 11, 2003 12:21 AMHahahaha! I didn't notice our matching outfits till now! Too funny. I was noticing how huge my ass looks from this angle. (And not huge in a J.Lo kinda way! lol)
