Do a Good Job, but Not TOO Good!

So I've been working on this account for the past few weeks, and any of you that keep watch on business news know that there's a big hullabaloo going on with Peoplesoft, Oracle and JDEdwards. It's all the talk here at my client site. (which is one of those 3). It's kind of exciting to watch, all these software titans duking it out.

Anyway, it's a big account, which explains my internment for the past couple days and working side by side with the pres. I was part of the demo for the client yesterday, and we actually got applause after it was done, and I was told 'In these tumultuous times, I'm thankful that you guys have provided us with this one bright spot'. Wow. Who knew software could bring such happiness?

So the pres is happy with me, and actually said 'Good Job', which previously was considered one of those pigs flying and fat lady singing or I've-got-everything-ready-for-the-wedding moments. I was happy. If I was at the office, I would have bragged, just a little. I was ready to do my peacock strut. I got that little morsel of praise that I've been yearning for the last week.

But then he said, 'I know you're busy over the next couple weeks, but I'll tell your manager to dedicate any other free time we have to help develop the sites of some of our other big accounts. I really want you to be involved with that.'

Argh. Burned!!! Kicked myself in the ass with that one. If I did a mediocre job, then he would have just let me off the hook. But I think that the sensei wants his grasshoppa to do bigger and better things. Which means more traveling and more work. Hmph!

Well, at least if I make myself invaluable, they can't fire me for moving to California. Maybe I might even get a *gasp* raise!

I believe I know which account you have been at this week. I work with one of their products on the account I am currently staffed on and know that they are in Denver. Join the fun as we follow the big corporate soap opera! =)

Doing such a good job is a double-edged sword indeed, no?
