War, HUH! What Is It Good For?!?

Took the red-eye home, and got in at about 6 this morning. The United flight I was on was overbooked since there was so much snow in Denver, so they were offering free flights to anyone giving up their seats. There was a flight leaving on American at the same time, so they booked me on that one and I got a free flight. Add that on to the $110 dollars that I won during my 2 hour stint at the roulette table and it was a pretty lucky day. Coming home from Vegas, there was $369 dollars in my pocket (interesting number, eh?) which made my total winnings about $220. Other than the stomach flu, Vegas was good to me!

And now I'm back to reality. It's always hard to keep up with the news when you're traveling. But I was able to watch a bit of news yesterday.

So we're at war. I've got so many mixed feelings about it. My gut tells me it's wrong. It scares me that there are so few people I know who really support the war. Like others, I see what they are hoping to accomplish. But is this the right way? It makes me really uneasy that so few other countries support us. France? Russia? We don't want to be on their bad sides. And it's not even countries supporting us, it's how much we're becoming unpopular with other countries. Protests in Australia, Tony Blair is getting VERY unpopular in Britain right now, the Pope speaks out in favor of those under attack, working outside of the United Nations, etc. We're not getting too many popularity points. But terrorism must be stopped, and people like Hussein and Bin Ladin must be taken out of power. Though, are we going about it the right way? Are we just inviting another terrorist attack on American soil?

No one close to me has been sent out. But I know people who are out there, or who are going to be sent out there. People with familes, babies, loved ones. People who made a choice to go out there. And these are people I respect and look up to. It's hard to think of, volunteering to go and fight a war that most of the world doesn't support, and that most people at home don't understand, leaving a good job and family that loves you. I pray for their safety, and I count the days until they come home again.

We'll see what happens...

So here's a little something for the people out there, the ordinary people, who become everyday heroes, risking their lives fighting for freedom. It's from one of my favorite musicals, Les Miserables...

"Bring Him Home"

God on high
Hear my prayer
In my need
You have always been there
He is young
He’s afraid
Let him rest
Heaven blessed.
Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home.

Bring him peace
Bring him joy
He is young
He is only a boy.
You can take
You can give
Let him be
Let him live.

Bring him home
Bring him home.

yah...i know wut u mean...coming from the bay area no one supports the war...and like...while it seems like...this might not be the right way of going about things...my sister, whose boyfriend is a marine reserve who was just sent to the middle east...has convinced me, for now, that this is a necessary war...

here's an interesting article on the iraqi-american perspective of the war...The Horrors of "Peace"

a lot of my friends went to protests here in Australia...and btw it's not the american pple who are becoming unpopular, just the leaders i guess. our PM is VERY unpopular right now... it's hard, to know what to do, cuz on both sides there are good arguments...which is why i'm in between!

I read your website every day and I enjoy a lot of what goes on in your life. But after reading your comment about the war, I just wanted to let you know that there are A LOT of people who support this war; you just don't see any of them in the streets talking about it, y'know. I'm a New Yorker of 28 years-born, raised, educated, and employed in Manhattan. I lost a friend and a cousin, who was a NY firefighter, on 9/11. I totally support this war. Don't worry about the UN resolution. Didn't the UN also create resolutions to disarm Iraq 12 years ago? No one talks about the fact that Hussein didn't honor THAT UN decision. Or the UN decision to place displaced Jews, i.e. Israel, in Palestine. And NO ONE defends the UN decision for the state of Israel to exist, except the US. Popular opinon doesn't mean much, Christine. Don't forget, a million Germans didn't make Hitler right, did it? Peace. =)

i agree with Goz - simply because this is basically how all major events are handled... there is a huge support base, but no one really knows about it. what gets featured on the news? only bad stuff! and that's all that gets shoved down our throats.

Thanks for all your input. As I said, it's a good cause. But it still scares me. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm always for peace, to find an alternative route. But it doesn't matter now, because we're at war now. So the best I can do is support the men and women that are out there, and to pray for the lives that have already been lost.

You know this might not make much sence to anybody but me but i don't support the war for one second but i do support our troops cause you know there doing what they are trained to do. There Protecting our country. But still there are other ways to go about this whole crazy thing than war and violence. Because you can't get peace through violence. I mean i have more than a few friends over there and they acted ok and all before they left but i could tell they were really nervouse. And i keep them all in my preyers and hope that nomore of them get shipped out. So like i said before Pease before violence is always good.
